Welcome to my site. My name is Chris and I'm a graphics designer specialising in layouts for magazines, books, brochures, leaflets, reports, adverts and just about anything that can be used to communicate visually with an audience. Let me help share your message with yours.
Based in Norwich, Norfolk, I work freelance using the latest version of InDesign/Photoshop /Illustrator from Adobe to create each layout. I can work from your existing templates/files or create an original layout bespoke to you and your requirements. Completed artwork is usually provided print-ready in compatible PDF. The full layout design service includes template design and placement of content.
I can also provide a bespoke layout template design service if you do not need full production of your project but instead just need a template to get you started. Please get in touch with me today so we can discuss your needs.
Clients include Hesperus Press, Blues Matters!, Driven by Health with Care, Lind Harley-Davidson and Malaya Blue. For the past year I have worked along with Blues Matters! as the sole designer for their bi-monthly magazine.
Publications depend on good design to communicate with their audience. Good design requires skill and knowledge in many different areas and the ability to combine these to create something that's stimulating to look at but still an enjoyable and comfortable experience to read.
Layout design is needed for a wide range of publications from magazines and books through to leaflets, brochures, catalogues and even reports. Whenever you want to communicate in such a way with your audience careful consideration must be given to the design and all that entails. The main objective is for the information to be presented to the reader in a way that they can easily follow the flow of information without any barriers. For text alone we can't just pick a font and be done with it. We are tasked with finding a font that matches the theme of the publication, and working out the best baseline height, font size, colour, style, position and spacing to ensure the text can be comfortably read. This may be just for one body of text in one section. The process is then repeated for headings, headers and footers, contents pages, front and end-matter in books, and any other text parts within the publication. Magazines will use multiple variations of fonts to give flair and drama to the page - drawing the eye from column to column. Each one carefully chosen.
Images within a publication also need careful placement. How do they balance the spread over-all? Does the proportion and position support the text or does the page look cluttered/empty? Are there awkward line-breaks in the text? and how can we deal with unusual shapes? We also need to ensure for print that any images used are suitable (correct size/density and colour profile) so when the page is printed the images don't appear blurred or distorted. Images used for print need to be at least 300 DPI (dots per inch) something you may already aware of or may have seen mentioned elsewhere. A good layout designer will process every image to ensure they are all suitable. vsellis have a very good guide on understanding DPI and preparing images for print if you would like more information.
Finally there is the preparation for print of the final document itself. Most documents are supplied to the printer as a PDF which are perfect for transferring digitally as all text, fonts and images used are embedded into one file. As a designer we need to make sure the PDF meets your chosen printer's requirements such as having adequate bleed, that it is the right colour mode (CYMK) and that there isn't any accidental overprint or high density ink coverage (where too much ink is used slowing dry times and risking smudging).
Hopefully you can see the value a layout designer adds to your publication. If you are looking for someone to get on board with your project then please get in touch with me today. I would be delighted to hear from you.
